Pre-Teaching Chemistry Degree

Suggested Program of Study

This is a term-by-term sample course schedule (program map). The milestones listed below each year are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years. A sample schedule is provided as a guideline to help you build a schedule each term. Your courses must be selected with your academic advisor to satisfy all core curriculum and other requirements. Refer to the for the most current curriculum. View a course checklist.

As a Chemistry major in the Pre-Teaching track, you should consider enrolling in electives such as SPEC 3000, EDUC 2110, EDUC 2120, and/or EDUC 2130.

Year 1
Fall
Spring
Milestones: Complete Principles of Chemistry sequence and some core requirements. Students registering for CHEM 1200 should complete the Chemistry Placement Test to see if they qualify for CHEM 1211. Completing CHEM 1200 may be necessary but it will delay enrollment in all subsequent chemistry classes. GPA should be 2.0 or higher. Complete 6 hours of a modern foreign language through Core or Elective courses. We strongly suggest that you join the VSU chapter of the American Chemical Society (SMACS). Mathematics helps us understand chemistry so students should begin CHEM 1211 with a good foundation of college algebra and trig. Students should complete their math sequence through Calculus II as soon as possible. Calculus I and II are pre-requisites for Physical Chemistry.

Milestones: ≥2.0 GPA. Complete Math, English, and Organic Chemistry requirements. We strongly suggest that you explore research (CHEM 4910), internship (CHEM 4800), and other opportunities that will prepare you for a career in chemistry.

Milestones: ≥2.0 GPA. Complete Physics and Biochemistry requirements. We strongly suggest that you explore summer research, internship, and other opportunities. By spring of your junior year, you should decide if you want to pursue a minor in another subject. Submit your graduation application. Visit the Office of Career Opportunities and begin planning for life after VSU. Electives depend on your career goals. You should discuss this with your faculty mentor. Electives must be chosen to give 39 total upper-division hours.

Milestones: ≥2.0 GPA By the spring of your senior year, you should: (1) compete applications for graduate study or professional school, if required for your career plans, (2) contact professors to write letters of reference for you, and (3) prepare a professional resume. Apply for graduation one semester before anticipated graduation date. Make plans to walk across that graduation stage - You Earned It!
