Materials are placed in Special Collections when they relate to Georgia, especially South Georgia, in some way, and/or when they are rare or valuable.  For example, we have books by Georgia Authors, books by university faculty, books about Georgia history, architecture, geology, and old records.  We have all theses and dissertations by students of the university.  We also have older materials related to the region, the United States, and the world.  Our Rare books are also housed here.  Because of the irreplaceable nature of many of these books, we have special policies for our Special Collection.

  • Special Collections are housed in the Archives and Special Collections Area on the fourth floor of the New Addition.

  • Hours are 9am-Noon and 1-4pm, Monday through Thursday, and Friday, 9am-Noon and 1-3pm, based on staff availability.   Other times may be available by appointment.  Call 229 333-7150.

  • Some Special Collections materials circulate only in-house and some are able to be checked out for the library's usual 28-day lending period.

  • If you need to use materials from Special Collections after hours, please let us know and we will leave those materials for you at the Circulation Desk in the New Addition.  Call us at 229 333-7150 or you may email us at archives@valdosta.edu

As part of a grant from LSTA in 2001, VSU Archives and South Georgia Regional Library created a "Union Catalog" of our Special Collections holdings.  We also added the books records of the Lowndes County Historical Society.  Search or browse these union catalogs for "one stop shopping."
