Group Therapy
In group therapy, students meet face-to-face with one or more trained group therapists weekly or bi-weekly throughout the semester. The content of the group sessions is confidential. Thus, what members talk about or disclose is not discussed outside the group. Group therapy sessions are typically offered Fall and Spring semesters and vary by topic. WHAT DO I TALK ABOUT WHEN I AM IN GROUP THERAPY?
The content of group therapy varies depending on the topics offered. How much you talk about yourself depends upon what you are comfortable with. If you have any questions about what might or might not be helpful, you can always ask the group. Many people feel that they are unique because of their problems, and it is encouraging to hear that other people have similar difficulties. In the climate of trust provided by the group, people feel free to support and help each other.
WHAT ARE THE GROUND RULES FOR MY PARTICIPATION IN THE GROUP? THERE ARE SIX BASIC RULES:
- If you are going to miss a session, please contact the group counselor.
- Be conscientious of the group meeting times as there is a late policy of 10 minutes so as not to disturb the session once it is in progress.
- Do not engage in violence against yourself or others in order to protect and respect the wellbeing of everyone in the group.
- It is up to each member to discuss their reasons for being in the group, however self-disclosure or revealing difficult material is not required.
- You, other members, and the group counselors are bound ethically and legally not to disclose the contents of the group sessions.
- If you decide that you have gained as much as possible from the group or that it isn’t the most appropriate treatment method for you, we ask that you let the group counselor know.
